Sai Baba's Incestuous Sister

A little further investigation into the incest scandal turned up the following tidbit:

"Venkamma was the closest to Sathya. Having married early (to Meesaraganda Subba Raju, Easwaramma's brother) she was like a second mother to Sathya." - Love Is My Form, p. 88

So, in short, Sai Baba's sister married her muvver's bruvver. What can we say? The whole family appears as one seriously twisted entity. Just think what the family tree would look like if you tried to trace it out.

Clever readers might note the similar name; 'Meesaraganda Subba Raju' was the name of Easwaramma's father too. It should be noted that Love Is My Form explains that it was a common affair for the Puttaparthi villagers to have the same names. The two sons of Kondama Raju, Sai Baba's grandfather, were both named 'Venkama Raju' with only the 'Pedda' (elder) and 'Chinna' (younger) epithets to distinguish between the two.

I (reasonably) propose that 'Meesaraganda' was the name of the clan on Easwaramma's side of the family. As Sai Baba himself is formally known as 'Ratnakaram' Sathyanarayana Raju ('Ratnakaram' being the name of the paternal clan), so it is with the Meesaragandas. In any case, marrying your own uncle? Jeez!

  • After going through your posts and the comments that they invited and the kind of answers you gave, I came to a conclusion that there is no point in trying to argue with you. Because you think you know every thing. You want the entire humanity to go by your sense of incest taboos. Sorry. The world was there well before we were all born. You and me did not control it then. Nor are we going to regulate its mores in future. Lastly, try to understand that incest is not such a crime or sin in God's eyes. His creation is full of incest. I am no devotee of Sathya Sai Baba. But I will not be surprised if God decides to be born as an inbred human being just to show that He is absolutely beyond and unaffected by human taboos.

  • Dear Telugu, that's disappointing.

I guess we will have to disagree with our ideas of God. I do not think that if God took an incarnation He would be born in an inbred family. From our scriptures we know that Rama and Krishna were 'Raghukula Bhushana' and 'Yadukula Bhushana' respectively, meaning that They were the jewels of the Raghu and Yadu families. The scriptures maintain that in Kali-yuga many families will be led astray and intermarry without any respects to caste and creed, let alone within the same family. Consequently you would think that God would be born in a 'perfect' family that is free from such contaminants.

Anyway, just to repeat, this is not about Andhra Telugu families and no offence is made to them. My purpose is about Sathya Sai Baba, that's all.

  • It is widely known even in law that marriage between cousins (Not paternal) and a girl being married to her maternal uncle, have been accepted practices in many South Indian communities for ages. Such marriages are recognised as lawful even by the courts set up by the British. Marriage customs vary from people to people. For example, among some communities one cannot marry one's maternal cousin but can do so if it is paternal cousin.

We should think twice before making pronouncements on incestuous marriages.

  • We probably should, if we were probing the legalities of the union. However, from a genetic perspective, do you think such unions are advisable?

  • There is a falsely written part here: 'That means Sathya Sai Baba' sister married her muvver's bruvver'. The part 'muvver' should be changed as 'mother' and the part 'bruvver' should be changed as 'brother'. Also, instead of 'her', 'their' can be used, because they were both the children of Pedda Venkama Raju and Eeswaramma.
