Sanghvi's Truth About Sai Baba

Vir Sanghvi, a journalist for the leading Indian newspaper - Hindustan Times - has published a scathing exposé of Sathya Sai Baba to mark the occasion of the Baba's 81st Birthday. Read on:

----------------------------------------

COUNTERPOINT - The Truth About Sathya Sai Baba

If Sathya Sai Baba is a sort of God come down to earth to help us, credulous humans, then why doesn’t he use his powers for the public good? What’s the point of materialising a sandesh when you need to materialise mounds of rice for the poor?

Vir Sanghvi

So, The Sathya Sai Baba turns 80 this week. The celebrations have already begun. TV channels show us footage of an Afro haired old man in a saffron robe being wheeled out for the adoration of teeming devotees. And naturally, all the old staples of the Sai Baba story have been pulled out: the ‘miracles’, the claim to be the reincarnation of the Sai Baba of Shirdi, the assassination attempts (two that I know of), the legion of celebrity devotees (including, apparently, former President R Venkataraman and current incumbent Abdul Kalam — perhaps there is a vibhuti corner in Rashtrapati Bhavan), and, alas, the sordid controversy about the old boy’s behaviour with little boys.

As you may have guessed from my tone, I am not big on the Sathya Sai Baba (I have more time for the Shirdi original), but I am continually amazed by the unwillingness of his devotees to concede that there is any truth to the many allegations made against the Baba during his long career as king of the godmen.

The homosexual abuse allegations are now too numerous to dispute. (Enter ‘Sathya Sai Baba’ and ‘homosexuality’ on a Google search and you will get an astonishing 18,000 references.) I am prepared to believe that at least some of the young men who claim to have been fondled or otherwise assaulted by the Baba are liars. But can every single person who claims to have been fondled be a liar? By now, the list of complainants runs into triple figures. And that’s just the Westerners. (The Indians seem less able to speak out against the Baba.) Surely, there is a case for the old boy to answer?

Bizarrely, none of the fondling-of-devotees stuff seems to perturb any of the Baba’s high-profile followers. And, when you ask the many senior politicians, who turn up at the Puttaparthi ashram to fling themselves at the Holy One’s feet, whether they are legitimising the Baba’s activities, the only responses you get follow predictable lines: “Even Jesus had to face criticism” etc etc.

Then, there’s the business of the ‘miracles’. There’s enough evidence to suggest (eye-witness accounts mainly) that Sai Baba can materialise rings, expensive watches, sacred ash and the odd locket almost at will. It is also true that portraits of Sai Baba have been known to ‘weep’ even when the swami is far away. And, the Baba has been able to regurgitate a shivling from his insides on days of special significance. It is clear that no ordinary man can do any of these things. But does it follow that, by virtue of these ‘miracles’, the Baba is some kind of God as many of his devotees argue?

There are two objections to this claim. The first is that while sacred ash may be unavailable to the average Joe, there are large numbers of people to whom it is as easily accessible as it is to the Holy One.

I refer, of course, to stage magicians.

The sad reality of the Sai Baba’s ‘miracles’ is that every single one of them can easily be duplicated by even a moderately talented conjuror. In the old days (dating back to the 1960s), when scepticism was first expressed about Sai Baba’s ‘magic’ powers, critics asked why it was that the watches he produced, seemingly out of thin air, all said ‘Made in Switzerland’ and why they tended to be much advertised brands. (Rich devotees got Omegas, the poor just got sacred ash.) Sai Baba’s defenders retorted that the great man had never claimed to be a holy watchmaker. His skill did not lie in creating watches or rings. These already existed. All the Baba did was to invisibly teleport them through solid matter till they reached his sacred fingers.

Problem: this is exactly what magicians claim to do. No magician claims to have created the rabbit that emerges from the hat. He claims to have teleported it. And so, what is so special about a man whose tricks are roughly on par with K. Lal but well below the standard of David Blaine or David Copperfield?

Sai Baba devotees are sensitive to the ‘Afro-haired conjuror’ sneer. Over a decade ago, the magician PC Sorcar was refused entry into Sai Baba’s presence. He went under a false name and when the Baba miraculously produced a sandesh, Sorcar returned the compliment by miraculously producing a rasgulla. The Baba began shouting and Sorcar was physically evicted from the ashram. The magician wrote about the encounter in Sunday magazine. But since then, he has come under so much pressure from the Sai Baba lobby that he’s reluctant to repeat the experience. No matter. There are enough people who can do the same tricks. Sanal Edamaraku of the Indian Rationalist Association, who does not even claim to be a magician, will cheerfully reproduce any of the old boy’s ‘miracles’ on demand.

The second objection to the Baba’s ‘miracles’ is also fundamental. His devotees now take the revised position that the Omega watches are merely his ‘calling cards’ meant to show ordinary mortals how cosmic he is. The real God-like stuff, they say, consists of the Baba’s ability to see into the future, to change destiny and to heal the human body. All this is highly dubious. If he can heal other people, then why doesn’t he just heal himself first, and kick away that wheelchair? If he can see into the future, how come he failed to predict the two assassination attempts? And if he can change destiny, why doesn’t he start by changing that Google search that portrays him as a bit of a sicko?

I am familiar with all the arguments against my position. There’s the traditional one of how the Baba does not want to interfere with the karmic cycle of good and evil. Well, in that case, he should stop pretending that he can heal people and remove karmic sickness. The moment he bends the laws of nature, he is already mucking about with the karmic cycle anyway. Then, there’s the he-does-so-much-charity argument. I do not for a moment dispute that he spends many of the crores his devotees shower on him for very good causes. And I accept that he has built hospitals, colleges (and, incongruously enough, a planetarium) for the people of Puttaparthi. But all that this proves is that he’s a philanthropist of some description. Nor is religious philanthropy novel to Hinduism. The Ramakrishna Mission does much more than the Sai Baba has ever done or ever will. (Actually, it’s done more work in Calcutta than Mother Teresa’s better-publicised missionaries — but that’s another story.) However, none of its monks claims to be God. And they don’t need to produce Omega watches out of thin air. They are too busy helping the poor.

But, my basic objection is this: if this man is a sort of God come down to earth to help us, credulous humans, then why doesn’t he use his powers for the public good? What’s the point of materialising a sandesh when you need to materialise mounds of rice for the poor? Why bother giving some crooked politician an Omega watch when you can stop the Tsunami? Why do these Godlike powers never extend to any more than mere conjuring tricks? Why do they never translate into anything that is substantial and truly helpful?

If this is the best that God can do, then surely PC Sorcar is God too?

  • I really feel pity for this person who anonymously posted. He is not against hindu religion. If you cheat people and walk them in wrong way then it is cheating. He is just asking questions. Can you answer why Baba is using Mahatma Gandhiji quote "My Life is My message". Why dont he materialise Pumpkin out of fin air. Why he is in Wheel chair. I can easy answer them can you. He is just an ordinary MAN not god

  • Why he has to built a hospital when he can heal people, isn't a waste of money?
Why he cannot give houses from thin air to the poor instead of the ashes?
When there was flood in Andhra Pradesh why he didn't do anything to stop it?
Why can't he go to a farm and bless the farmer to have more yield this year?
the so called devotees should have some reasoning to understand, and one day the truth will be out and there will be huge cry then,

  • well written and thought provoking.it doesnt really go beyond faith.u think "the medicine" heals and let urself feel less sick!likewise, god.its all in the head.and acceptance doesnt make a supposed "god" any less mortal.and wit that comes a tad bit negativity to put that in the least.if somethin as abstract as lingams and teleported omega watches is accepted then the scandalious reports are no different!

  • Vir Sanghvi has brought about some very interesting facts, while acknowledging some of the many deeds that Sai Baba (hereon abbrev. SB) did to help some peoples of society, which many Godmen/Godwomen did and are doing. Namely Amma, Chinmaya, RK Mutt and so on. But Sanghvi like most pressmen is trying to be escapish/gentlish and not ask the hard truths of so called 'important people' in society.

There were Press Reports of SB molesting young boys and another incident which came in Sunday magazine and i guess India Today too, where SB was accused of murder of 4/5 boys/young men. They were done to death to cover up something and even the Police had to run for cover with the then President of India bailing SB out. If the Kanchi Sankaracharya can be tried, why not SB? How can people be above the law? The other question is will the Indian Govt ever dare go against any Religious Leader of Muslims and Christians in India? There are double standards to everything in India added to the Corrupt Netas and their looting of the country. Mahatma Gandhi must be rolling in his grave!

  • There is no question about discussing certain media reports about satya sai baba.Either such a large no. of people including at least 100 countries are damn fool to be fooled by this five feet high trickster or the allegations have some grey matter in them. Its damn easy to be abusive about someone like Satya Sai but its rather difficult to follow your own religion. Whosoever thinks satya sai is a mere fraud must take up a little effort to begin even .01% of social work he has been doing since last forty years. Think if you have the capacity to fool millions of people round the world including greatest scientists, linguists, artists, saints, politicians, an age can produce for at least 70 continuous years just by knowing a little of magic then i encourage them to announce themselves as God. If someone is so keen to visit semi-porn allegations on satya sai on google and then confirm their stand i must tell everyone that there are more than 100 sites that record satya sai baba miracles with names, places and people's present status. So apply your brain and soul to understand the truth.AND SHOW YOUR COURTESY in Language you use.

  • With due respect to any person or their belief-I would love to appreciate this article-any man's elevation to Godhood is ridiculous!! Ya some people may have some special qualities-but calling them God is like underestimating the Almighty-its sin! and honestly-getting things out of thin air is a mockery to Godhood!( has God ever dropped sweets or something on anyone's head ??) Also Salvation is not achieved by advise of a person-it is found only through searching ones inner self..Dunno when people will realize this!!!

  • Vir is simply great. And Vir, you should keep on doing what you are doing. When the followers of baba don't have any answers, they stoop down to the personal attacks. The baba was a dog...and his followers are sheep. A pedophile loser. But the biggest losers are the people who are commenting in favour of baba because they know everything deep down their hearts and they can not even speak up their mind properly. They are lazy bastards who are happy to eat the ash produced by a retard. Well at least good thing is that he is no more.....and the bad thing is another sai baba will rise up soon because these followers, these losers have a real problem of living with dignity and will always need somebody who will keep them in Matirx.

I am nobody to pass a judgement on either of you. but there has to be some substance in a person who has remained staunchly apolitical throughout his career. Accepting him as God is an individual decision.

  • I think the first and foremost thing that we all need to understand here is that any person who has taken birth or been born in the physical form is NOT GOD ! God or the Supreme Power does not need to take human form to get rid of his karmic debts, but human beings do. So any person who has taken the physical form is just another human being, down here because of karmic reasons. Hence, even great souls like Rama, Krishna, Jesus, Shirdi Sai baba etc also had to leave their physical form after fulfilling their respective roles on this earth. In their physical forms, even Shirdi Sai Baba and Jesus referred to the Supreme Soul as their Father, which is the ultimate truth. Connect with the Supreme Soul or GOD and then you don't need any GODMAN !

  • This is for those who want answers regarding few questions arised. It is clearly mentioned in this article interviewed by a journalist way back in 1976 - http://www.saibaba.ws/articles/interviewwithjournalistsept1976.htm
Those who want to believe him, let them believe, and those who do not want to let them not. But none of us have the right to question about his devotees or money that Baba had spend for a good cause (I am sure this will continue by his grace and guidance even in the future). When the devotees who are the very donors did not question, then who are those people who have not spent a penny for any good cause have the right to talk about Baba's intention. We know what we are doing. So, we do not require any peoples' opinion or concern here.
As per Vir Sanghvi is concerned, I appreciate with his questions but he also have to find out the answers himself. That's his job right. When these allegation were made, what was he doing then? Did he not realize to bring forth the truth by investigation when Baba was alive giving darshans to the devotees? Questioning and criticizing is a very easy job. Even I can criticize, big deal. But, bringing forth the truth is a challenge. Why didn't the so called press do this? If the journalist were so concerened, why did you not come out with your queries when Baba was alive? and why now when Baba has left his physical body? It only arises lot of questions on the integrity and intentions of the media, news papers and press.
There may be allegations against Sathya Sai Baba. But, had you been there to investigate it or did you investigate it. Don't sit inside a four wall and comment rubbish about Baba. For that, get your facts correct. To do that, you should be present in the place when Baba was alilve, giving darshans to the lakhs of devotees, in Puttaparthi.
Again, please do not misunderstand, no one is asking you to believe Baba. Just do your work. You have accused someone, so prove it. How will you prove it unless you move out of your seat and start investigating. Did these guys, the so called journalists did that? NO!! In that case, how can you guys be correct in accusing Baba on any case. How far is the media authentic in providing right information, when they themselves are involved in scams and crave for publicity and does journalism as a mere business.
So before questioning Baba's intention. Question yourself whether do you have the standards to question Baba? This applies not only for journalists but also for the public who just believe whatever is published in the news papers are true, without even knowing the facts.
This is not journalism and this not being a responsible citizens. Humble request to the journalists and citizens. Believing or not believing is your choice. But do not speak ill about somebody when you do not know anything about that person. This is not some sort of time pass that you do or a business. Think very well before you comment or talk. Get your facts correct by being present in the location and not by mere reading. Each individuals will provide different variations of stories. Only way to know the truth is to experience yourself by being physically present in that location when Baba was giving darshans, or materializing vibhuthi's, jewlleries or watches, or when he was providing speech to his devotees.

Lastly to Vir Sanghvi, my question to him is, You were also accused in scams. So, how far are you a responsible journalist to question others integrity and intentions?

    Thank You

Do they also believe in this supposedly called Godman with "for the rich only tag" and have nothing better to do.Have they attended the funerals of all those helpless and poor who commit suicide due to the Government's corrupt policies or get killed as whistle blowers of corruption which is a much nobler cause.

  • In our country, people are too religious to the point of being gullible. Prayer should be your personal communication with God. You do not need middle men (comission agents) posing as gurus telling you what to do. While others have progressed enough to start exploring other planets, alas we leave our work to flock to God men

and also heard about shootout by SB's body gaurds when Prabhu(I think so) was fleeing from his Ashram

  • i am a believer in jesus christ. but still i think all the religions and godmen, sects, groups trying to sell that mystery called god to unfortunate, helpless ordinery people is that there is huge money in this. few drops of money makes a mighty ocean of funds and assets growing over the years to billions of dollars/rupees. these people are after this money only. who cares about either the so called God or these unfortunate poor people. but one thing as the politicians need the votes, these liars want the patronage of millions of poor to build up an empire on which they can amass wealth. i believe in god because i am an immortal. but these self declared immortals use mortals like me to further their materialistic ambitions. nothing more to say.

  • If he has the power to cure diseases with ash, why couldn't he save himself and survived for two weeks on deathbed using ventilators and dialysis..

  • Once I saw Vir Sanghvi's presentation on "Aaj Tak" I lost any respect I had for this Conman.
When I searched youtube for fake miracles of Saibaba & saw them which really proved to me beyond any doubt Vir has shown genuine tapes. I have recorded the interview of a foreign devotee & he is not lieing, He had shown enough materials as proof of his trauma of being used by this paedofile.
If anybody still need any proof-then they will get it once they die & reache the place Sai is interred,-most probably in HELL.

  • Well Friends, WE all are GOD. The point to note is that Sathya Sai Baba realised it and we do not. We are part of the same manifestation as GOD. All of us are Atmas, Which is a part & parcel of Parmatma. Because of our karmic imbalances we cannot merge in Parmatma-the moksha till the credit-debit balances become zero. As long as you are living in DAWAIT you will not understand it. You must start getting the light of ADWAITNESS. I'm sorry if I have not been able to put you wise. Start meditation and be aware of your soul by being a witness to your Mind & Body. Your EGO will crumble down and you will also start experiencing Divinity. Then You will not condemn him .Submitting these words with Apologies.REGARDS to ALL SOULS including VIR SANGHVI as such controversies open the faculties of mind and a person is inclined to move towards Practical SPIRITUALISM.
WITH BEST WISHES TO ALL ON THEIR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

  • Well, Mr Sanghvi, you say you can give more time to Shirdi Sai Baba. Based on your argument that if Sathya Sai Baba has divine powers, why doesnt he heal people, why doesnt he stop Tsunami, can i ask why did not the same happen during Shirdi Sai Baba's time. He too did divine miracles limited to individuals and or micro-instances. Can we take this argument to say Shirdi Sai Baba too was not divine. Similarly, if Jesus was God, why could not he convince humans about his identity and bring in peace rather than getting crucified. Your argument means, if there is God in human form, there cannot be pain & if there is pain, there is no GoD. I am not saying Sathya Sai Baba was divine, neither I am saying he was not. I am bringing a point where maybe, to explain this, logic is insufficient and everything is not logic. I believe in God because of the perfect harmony of nature. I cannot prove it by logic. When we think spiritual and divine, it is a game of belief and not logic.

  • Vir Sanghvi,
I am not going to comment on a dead person. I am going to write about a living fake sadhu, who is nothing but YOU. First of all you were caught in the 2G scam for unethical journalism and what moral rights you have to write about others? When you have blasted one Sadhu on faking things and a magician, what should be told about you, who has been faking things right from the beginning and destroyed the sense of journalism by taking money?
First be a man and have the guts to accept your mistake than pointing at others, you fourth gender Vir Sanghvi.

  • IT IS A WELL-KNOWN FACT THAT MANY OF THE INDIANS INCLUDING THE EDUCATED ONES FALL A EASY PREY TO ALL SUPERSTITIOUS BELIEFS AND FOLLOW BLINDLY A GODMEN OR A SWAMIJI LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION TO THEIR MANY PROBLEMS IN LIFE WITH ALL HOPE THAT THEY WOULD BE DELIVERED FROM THEIR MISFORTUNES OR MISERIES BY BEING IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE DIVINE'S PRESENCE AFTER ALLOWING TO BE DUPED BY FAKE GODMEN LIKE SAI BABA WHO COULD VERY WELL PERFORM CONJURING TRICKS THAT LOOK SO MIRACLE IN THE EYES OF THESE BLIND DEVOTEES !!! SO AS ALONG AS PEOPLE IN SUPERSTITIOUS BELIEFS AND THINK ALL THE CONJURING TRICKS AS MIRACLES BY DIVINE POWER THAN THEY ARE DESTINED TO LIVE LIKE A HERD OF SHEEP WHICH LURKS IN THE WILDERNESS OF LIFE !!!

SO ONLY THE REAL GOD WHO IS ONLY ONE CAN SAVE THESE LOT WHO ARE READILY SUBMIT THEMSELVES TO ANYTHING ABSURD DUE TO THE FRAILNESS THAT TEND TO OVERRIDE THEIR RATIONALITY AND SENSIBILITY IN THEIR LIFE !!

EVEN IN SPITE OF MANY CASES OF IMMORAL ACTS OF THESE FAKE GODMEN AND SWAMIJIS BEING BROUGHT INTO PUBLIC AWARENESS WHICH PROVIDES FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALIZE THEIR FOLLIES; THEY STILL ARE UNWILLING TO GO THROUGH ANY REFORMATION !!!

UNTIL THESE GODMEN ARE THRASHED IN THE PUBLIC BY THE MEDIAS AND PUT INTO PRISON LIKE IN THE CASE OF SARASWATHI SWAMIGAL OF KANCHEEPURAM; PREMANANDA AND NITHYANANDA ETC..... !!!!

SO LET THE PROPER SENSE PREVAIL ON THESE BLIND FOLLOWERS OF SATHYA SAI BABA WHO IS KNOWN FOR HIS CONTROVERIES RANGING FROM HOMOSEXUALITY TO MURDER CASE ISSUES IN RESPECT OF HIS PROPERTY AT ABUDSBURRY, ANNA SALAI, CHENNAI WHEN HIS FAMILY MEMBERS WERE INVOLVED IN PROPERTY DISPUTES !!!

    JAI HIND !

  • WHEN YOU PREFER TO CALL SAI BABA AS A GOD THEN LET US ALL BE READY TO HONOUR OTHER REMAINING MODERATE MAGICIANS TOO AS GODS OR GODDESSES !!!

HOW RIDICULOUS WE HAVE BECOME LIVING STILL IN STONE AGE !!!

OH ! TRUE GOD SAVES US !

    Jai Hind !

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 29 April, 2011 19:57

  • IT WOULD BE MORE APT TO CALL THIS CONJURER AS A FAKE GODMAN THAN AS SATYA SAI BABA !!!

  • If we talk abt sb in such a great detail then we should also talk abt Lord Krishna , Cant he stop the war between pandavs & kauravs couldt he live for long as for decades why he died , can a human put a mountain on his little finger . etc....
& what abt lord shiva who killed his own son who was trying to stop him to enter in the house . lord shiva was considered to be an Antaryami then couldnt he know that this guy is his son . & what abt brninging the head of animal. Jeev hatya kya us jamane mein paap nahin hota tha kya .
now wht abt jesus christ if he was healer than cant he save himself of being crucified . & wht abt Mohammad saab it is said tha kuran comes to this world through then wht is the proof . that the holy kuran was not from his own mind .

There could thousands of Questions agaist every incarnation . but truth remains hidden . I can only say that if every above stated are cosidered as god then unfortunately Vir sanghavi was not there in those era otherwise he must have even Questioned them .
Aleegations will always be allegations , they can nat be proved .criticizing is a very easy job.
& what we see from our eyes is the matrialistic world & all the cameras too, our eyes even can be wrong . we have to see the things done by sathya sai baba or shirdi sai baba by our spiritual eyes , only then we will be able to accept things wich we call as magic . those were not magic but divinity of a divine person . who rarely are born to teach love & real meaning of life .

    Yours
    Pankaj

  • There is nothing wrong if Sai Baba calls himself God. There is a bit of God in everybody. Some people recognize it. Normally, the persons who recognize it do not declare so, but then there are exceptions. Sri Krishna and Jesus Christ may be exceptions.

Producing ash and other " miracles" is just a trick, and I am sure that the more wiser of the Baba devotees are aware of it. But Jesus also had to resort to 'miracles ' to bring ingnorant masses to take notice, and hence closer to the TRuth , He was trying to convey. So the ends justify the means if its all for the common good.

However, nobody will doubt the intentions of Baba, in his role in doing public good. I have not heard of him having spent the money received by the trust on matters other than public service, or charitable causes. I do not believe he craved the wealth or the comfortable life. I really believe he was indifferent to all that.

As for the web posts on his sexual preferences, they are too small in number, and one can easily believe that the people who posted them were the perverts, or had hallucinated.

The bottom line is that the man has given physical and mental relief to millions , and that is a godly task. Humans who have not equalled his taks should not comment on him, Vir Singhvi and me included. ( My comment above was only to drive home the last line conclusion)

  • Vir Sanghavi - Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones - Heard of this saying? :)

To me Nira Radia is also God - Had she not existed, you would not have been exposed. Even then, I forgive you and will continue reading your products. You have a way with words. Wish you good luck and a wonderful journey on this planet.

PS: If you had made a mention of the stupendous social work that Sathya Sai Baba has done your article would have been unbiased and balanced. Please keep this in mind for your future articles.

  • This is Just a Time Pass, the Man has died. He has done good for the poor also but the wrong thing is to do is to claim himself God by showing Magic.

Videos have fake SSB has spread over the internet like Virus.

The internet has more BAD deeds than his good.

So whatever little thing also he has done will be erased.

To all religious devotees of any religion :

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED. ITS TIME TO BUILD A NEW RELIGION/COMMUNITY TO SUIT CURRENT CONDITIONS & FUTURE NEEDS.
